• Winner of the “2001 Corning Research Outstanding Publication Award”.

• Awarded by the Lasers and Electro-Optics Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (LEOS/IEEE), for the “Best Paper” of 1998 IEEE/LEOS Annual Meeting.

• Awarded by SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering, with a scholarship for potential long-range contributions to the field of photonics (1999).

  Awards and Distinctions

• VACE II (Video Analysis and Content Extraction) Evaluation of Systems by NIST (USA): Submitted system Ranked 2nd in people and vehicle detection and tracking in surveillance videos. Invited in special event organized by D. Moellman of DIA and Dr. M. Macedonia of Chief Technology Officer for the US Army PEO STRI program.

• IBM Thanks! award: Best Student Intern Advisor, Summer 2004. Awarded by summer student intern Marta Baberro, University of Michigan.

• Academic Visitor, IBM T. J. Watson Research Center. Summer 2004. Evaluator of new technology (Reusable Dialog Components). Supervision of summer student interns (4 students). Author of Architectural Blueprint for Re-usable Dialog Components.

• INTEL Ambassador Award: An award for the successful run of lectures on behalf of INTEL in 2003.

• Graduated NTUA, EECS, Ranked 2nd (9.69/10) in five year average.
  TEE award for being the first in class at NTUA (University) for years 1984, 1985.

• Mathematical Society Award and Participation to the Mathematical Olympiad, Prague 1984. Ranked within the top 100 out of 350 participants.

  BEST PAPER AWARDS
  
  A Best Student Paper Award was granted to Th. Pliakas, PhD Student at the University of Aegean, at the 3rd International Mobile Multimedia Communications Conference (MobiMedia 2007) for his paper: “Joint Scalable Video Coding and Packet Prioritization for Video Streaming over IP/802.11e Heterogeneous Networks” co-authored by Th. Pliakas, Dr. G. Kormentzas, Dr.S. Tsekeridou.
  The presented work was the result of the joint collaboration of the University of Aegean and AIT.
  
  The Best Paper Award was granted to Th. Perperis, PhD student at the University of Athens, at the Multimedia Metadata Applications (M3A) Workshop of the Triple-i 2007 Conference (i-Know, i-Semantics, i-Media), 5-7 September 2007, Graz, Austria, for his paper: An Ontological Approach to Semantic Video Analysis for Violence Identification co-authored by Th.Perperis (Univ. of Athens), Dr. S. Tsekeridou (AIT), Prof. S. Theodoridis (Univ. of Athens).
  The presented work was the result of the joint collaboration of the University of Athens, the University of Thrace and AIT.
  
  AIT GRADUATES
  
  Seven ΑΙΤ graduates, from the 2006 MSIN program (offered by AIT in cooperation with Carnegie Mellon University), have been accepted, with scholarships, by leading European universities to continue their PhD studies. Supported by their education and research activities at AIT, the graduates are prepared to meet the high standards required to implement research projects and to promote cutting-edge technology using advanced methods and techniques. Following their accomplishments, the following students have been admitted to the following PhD programs:

• Chinwe Abosi, from Botswana, MSIN graduate (2006), has been accepted by scholarship at Essex University, in UK. Her PhD will be on Photonics technologies.

• Konstantinos Gkoutzis, from Greece, MSIN graduate (2006), has been accepted by the University of Plymouth in UK. His PhD will be on XML Technologies & Semantic Web.

• Ghassan Karame, from Lebanon, MSIN graduate (2006), who, during his studies collaborated with two research groups at AIT - Algorithms & Security, Autonomics & Grid Computing - has been accepted by the ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich).
  Meanwhile, AIT Alumni who have continued to work with research groups at AIT after their graduation, have received recognition in the scientific community, have been published in international scientific journals (IEEE, SIAM), have participated in conferences and have had an active role in research projects carried out in AIT’s laboratories. The experience and results gathered supported the development of their independent research activities and enabled them to continue their studies towards obtaining a Ph.D.

  Prototype tracking system amongst two best in the world
  
  The results of the international evaluation of Video Analysis and Content Extraction - VACE II which is run by the National Institute of Standards in the US, were announced on Thursday, June 29th in the NIST facilities in Washington DC. Several sites from Europe and the US participated in the evaluations where a large number of real-life videos were processed and objective measures of performance in multiple categories (accuracy, false alarms, correct track association, etc.) were utilized to evaluate the methodologies proposed by the various sites.
  
  The prototype system that was developed by the Autonomic & Grid Computing Group headed by prof. Lazaros Polymenakos was ranked second in precision in detecting and tracking vehicles and humans in video scenes. The AGC video tracking system was the result of the research efforts of Prof. Aristodemos Pnevmatikakis and prof. Polymenakos with the assistance of former MSIN students and current AIT researchers A. Stergiou and V. Mylonakis.
  
  Mr. Haris Kampouris, AIT/CMU MSIN graduate, was awarded the Outstanding Student Service Award in the Research Assistant category. Mr. Kampouris was nominated by Professor Dawn Song, during the INI Graduation ceremony on May 20th, 2006, in Pittsburgh, USA.
  
  Prof. Song stated that “Theochari's thesis project is on strengthening Internet routing infrastructure robustness through diversity. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that explores how to enhance the Internet routing infrastructure robustness by introducing diversity.”
